Masterclass with Leanne Gibbs

The future of early childhood education in Australia needs great leadership and that is nurtured and developed in every early childhood education setting. If you’re looking for inspiration and practical guidance on how to develop a pedagogy of leading and leadership then this ECA masterclass is for you.

In this year’s leadership masterclass, Leanne Gibbs will explore the latest cutting-edge research on leadership, guide you on how organisations can create the right conditions for the development of leadership, and help you to identify and cultivate emerging leadership. This masterclass will change your thinking on leading in early childhood education through an exciting encounter with theory, practice and stories of leadership development in settings across Australia.

The leadership masterclass will build your knowledge on the ECA Leadership Capability Framework’s Leadership Capability 3—Builds respectful, trusting, nurturing and equitable professional relationships and share knowledge from the new ECA Leadership Provocations.

Presenter

Leanne Gibbs has worked in the early childhood education and care (ECEC) sector for more than 30 years. She holds qualifications in early childhood education, politics and public policy. Leanne’s roles have included teacher and director of long day care and preschool programs; adviser and manager with local, state and federal governments; teacher and lecturer within early education, management and leadership programs; manager of professional development programs for major providers; and CEO of a peak provider in ECEC. She has authored publications on advocacy, management, policy and leadership. Leanne currently sits on boards and national advisory committees, works with organisations to build leadership and governance capacity, and is a PhD candidate at Charles Sturt University undertaking research on leadership in ECEC.

Making Marks: Creating and curating children’s art

Masterclass with Dr Barbara Piscitelli AM – SOLD OUT

An interactive experience led by internationally honoured collector and curator of children’s art, Dr Barbara Piscitelli AM. This masterclass will feature the process of developing Making Marks, an exhibition of early mark-making by very young Tasmanian children. Making Marks features the ideas of children from birth to four years, as shown in their explorations. Making Marks was created by the B4 Early Years Coalition and Partners in collaboration with children, artists, educators and families across Tasmania. The exhibition is being held at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

This masterclass will feature a mini-lecture, two workshop activities and group discussion. Participants will learn how to set-up and maintain a child-centred studio, how to collect and exhibit children’s art, and how to work collaboratively with artist, educators and communities. It will stretch participants’ understanding of very young children’s creative and artistic lives.

Presenter

Dr Barbara Piscitelli AM has an academic background in early childhood education and creative arts. She began her career as a teacher of young children and then spent more than 20 years working as an early childhood lecturer and researcher in the university sector. Barbara consults in the arts and cultural sector, works directly with children and communities, and collects and curates children’s art. She specialises in research and program development for museums, libraries, galleries, performing arts centres and communities. Barbara publishes in various journals, including Curator, Museum Management and Curatorship, Asia Pacific Journal of Education and International Journal of Early Childhood. She served on the council of the National Museum of Australia and the board of the Queensland Museum. The Barbara Piscitelli AM Children’s Art Archive is held at the State Library of Queensland and contains more than 4000 images made by children from Australia, Vietnam and China since the 1980s. For her work on behalf of children and culture, Barbara received an Order of Australia in 2006 (Member, General Division) and a Chime Bell Award in 2015 from the Hubei (China) Provincial Government.
